The Geilston Hall - Celebrating 125 years!

The Geilston Hall

Celebrating 125 years old and still going strong!

According to the Helensburgh and Garelochhead Times; on the 30th of July 1889 the commemorative stone of the new Drill Hall in Cardross was laid by Miss Catherine Geils.

The hall was being built by Glasgow Architects; Honeyman and Keppie, remarkably quickly following a fire which destroyed the old wooden Drill Hall in the March of that same year. At least 5 draughtsmen were involved according to the firm’s workbook. This workbook is now in the Macintosh Museum in Glasgow University. Why? Because, one of the draughtsmen to work on these drawings was a young Charles Rennie Macintosh. A photograph of the all the young men can be found in James Macaulay’s book on Macintosh.

The Hall is a substantial stone building, beautifully set back from the main road. The hall is now run as a charity by the Hall’s Management Committee on behalf of the Cardross Community Council since it was gifted to the people of Cardross by the original Geilston Hall Trust in 1984.

The hall is well used by various clubs and organisations. There is a Dog Club, Archery, an After School Club, Guides & Brownies as well as Fitness and Dancing, to name a few! The Community Council holds its monthly meetings in the hall too.

The Hall is available for private functions and has hosted a number of Weddings over the years.

The Management Committee hold a number of fundraising dances and the annual Burns Supper is a popular event in the social calendar! The Committee are currently working hard to secure vital funding to begin major repair works to the Hall roof and stonework, keeping the Hall viable for the Community for the next 125years!

And so, the Committee are delighted to mark the Hall’s 125th Anniversary with a Ceilidh to be held on Saturday 4th October 2014 from 8pm with the Andrew MacDonald Ceilidh Band. Tickets are £12.50 and include a light supper. For tickets please see any Committee Member or by telephoning 01389 841580 or 841442 or log into our Facebook Page!

Please come along and enjoy a great night to celebrate our 125th Anniversary

and help support the Hall! All Welcome.
